A single-herb liquid extract of dried seeds of Mucuna pruriens, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Velvet bean is a vigorous tropical climbing legume with drooping racemes of dark purple flowers and pods covered in fine orange bristles. Those bristles are the reason for the species name: they detach at a touch and cause an intense itch that lasts for hours, and the plant has to be handled in gloves or after the pods are washed. The seeds inside are hard, glossy and mottled black, brown and white. It is grown across the tropics as a green manure and cover crop as much as anything else.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Velvet bean seed contains levodopa, the same compound used as a prescription medicine for Parkinson disease. Do not use it if you take levodopa, carbidopa, MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics or any medication for Parkinson disease, and do not use it if you have a psychiatric condition, liver disease or melanoma. Not for use in pregnancy. Do not exceed the suggested amount.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
